Protect the Environment Unit

Protect the Environment is one of three units in the SOP Curriculum and one of the four Pillars of Stewardship at IslandWood. There are two objectives within this unit:

1. Students will ask Questions to plan and carry out a student led investigation to build climate literacy
2. Students will analyze natural phenomena to construct an explanation with evidence to build climate literacy

Climate literacy, according to the U.S. Global Climate Research Program (2009), is someone who “understands the essential principles of Earth’s climate system, knows how to assess scientifically credible information about climate, communicates about climate and climate change in a meaningful way, and is able to make informed decisions with regards to actions that may affect climate.”
